In October 2018 I was in Las Vegas, at the Mandalay Bay Hotel. This is the location where, exactly 1 year before a shooter killed 58 people attending the Harvest Music Festival on route 91.
I’ve always found the size of these towers to be intimidating, and menacing feeling of this building contrasted with the pool area, where the umbrellas were open, and the place was buzzing with families on holiday. I did not include any of it. I simplified the scene, accentuated the shadow on the tower, did not paint its windows. I closed all the umbrellas and spaced them evenly as if they were red figures standing in vigil.
