In October 2018 I was on holiday with my family in Las Vegas, at the Mandalay Bay Hotel. I took photos of the pool at the back of the hotel, initially because I liked the interplay between the water, the building at the forefront, and the hotel tower at the back.
I’ve always found the size of these towers to be intimidating, but this time more so as it was the location of the shooting that happened in October the year before.
The menacing feeling of the tower contrasted with the pool area, where the umbrellas were open, and the place was buzzing with families on holiday. I did not include any of it. I simplified the scene, accentuated the shadow on the tower, did not paint its windows. I closed all the umbrellas and spaced them evenly as if they were red figures standing in vigil.
